Time is Money and DIY IT Repair Takes Time
Your staff is a fine-tuned team that can crack any problem. You watch them destroy challenges every day, all while staying within budget. It only seems natural to assign one of your bright employees to repair a broken computer; sure they can figure it out, but factor in all the time spent on the issue and all of your savings may vanish.
One of the greatest benefits about having seemingly limitless information at our disposal through tools like the internet is that we are all empowered to tackle any project. It is as if the information revolution has spawned a do it yourself (DIY) revolution. If you have the time to invest in research, then you can pick up virtually any new skill. Log onto YouTube and learn how to play a musical instrument, learn TV/VCR repair from Wikipedia, or get your degree. All this is wonderful for enriching your life, but this DIY approach does not translate well into the workplace; primarily because learning a new skill is time consuming, and in business time is money.
With the way technology is trending, maybe the not-too-distant future will be like The Matrix and we will be able to plug a cable into our brain and instantly learn a new skill like Kung Fu or IT repair. This technology is of course dependent upon a war with the machines that drives us underground, but this too may be in the not-too-distant future. The point here is that accessing information is instantaneous, but learning a new skill still takes time.
Something else to consider before taking on a DIY project is how much a person already knows about the subject matter before they begin their DIY adventure. Learning a new skill from scratch will take longer than if somebody already has a working knowledge of the subject. This plays out in your office if you assign an employee who is "good with computers" to research and come up with a computer fix. They may be good at using a computer, but what if the issue is with the hardware or a downed server? Technology is complicated, without proper training it is easy to sink considerable time into trying to fix a complex issue through trial and error, with a real possibility of never arriving at a solution.
Nothing reflects the adage "time is money" more accurately than time used by your employees. There is the obvious expense of what you are paying an employee, and then there are extra expenses like taxes and insurance that can really add up. If everything is going according to plan, then your employees should be spending their time making you money. Therefore, if an employee is spending time researching how to fix a computer problem, then their time is costing you both in salary and in loss of revenue. To make matters worse, there is no guarantee they will fix your PC properly, or even find a solution at all. Calling in the IT professionals at Computerware guarantees the problem will be taken care in a timely manner. This will free up your employees to spend their time doing what they do best, making you money.
