Is it Time for a New Windows?
On October 26, Microsoft will make Windows 8 available for the masses as they aim to usher in a new era of Windows-based mobile computing. In recent times, the use of Windows has fallen starkly behind those mobile devices that run Android and iOS operating systems.
Windows 8 has a redesigned graphic user interface (GUI) that offers upgrades for some principal business applications. The GUI is optimized for touchscreen devices using a "metro-style" that allows applications to be opened in the entire screen without the option for the classic Windows minimize and maximize options.
The classic Windows display has been replaced with tiles, but hasn't been completely tabled, however. From the Windows 8 homepage, which for most users will be completely unrecognizable, you can select an option to bring up the classic display that resembles the one that will be more familiar if you run Windows XP/Vista/7. Essentially, the Windows desktop has become an app.
Ah yes, apps. Microsoft has also updated its digital distribution platform and will have thousands of apps available for download when the new "Windows Store" launches in Oct. 26. From the Windows Store you can buy all apps, games, and media. The idea is to give Microsoft a digital distribution option that can rival Google Play and the Apple App Store. As anyone that has been using Android or iOS devices can attest, apps adds a degree of efficiency to computing.
Windows 8 also offers a boost in speed. The quick start-up is a logical step for Microsoft to take since they are looking to launch their own hardware solutions that compete with Apple's staggering dominance of the tablet market. The Windows 8 based Surface Tablet is the device that Microsoft hopes will start them down the path toward competition with the iPad. Having been dependent on other manufacturers to produce mobile hardware to run its mobile Windows OS for nearly ten years, Microsoft's Surface tablet should cause a stir in the mobile computing market in the months to come.
